Copra Dryer

A wood fired kiln used to dry the coconut into copra for export. One of the bigger agricultural exports in Vanuatu and how many local Ni Vanuatu make there living.

Thanks again for a very interesting photo which gives additional insight into your area and people. I had to look copra up in the dictionary. Do you extract the oil or is that done elsewhere?

Copra is the dried product, using in cooking and thinks like icing on cakes etc etc. The oil is when you crush the wet coconut first and has all sorts of uses and is a mover in bio fuels use currently. The local power company has set up an oil mill to extract the product and mix with diesel to run our generators.

Thank for that explanation. I had heard the word, copra before, but never had occasion to really think about what it meant.
