Where there's a will there's a way!

With a low tide happening just off Eratap Island the only option to get the boat off this stunning island was to get out and pull! Luckily the water was beautiful and the sun shinning.

This trigger fish was removed from a 42kg Dog Tooth Tuna, you can see how fish eat their prey whole and how the skin has already been digested!

Having been hustled and bustled around Port Vila and surrounds on shopping trips and tours for 12 hours, the passengers are now on the back deck with a beer and a champagne saying goodbye to the lights of Port Vila, and musing to each other - what was the name of that place again!?

Heading off to catch some dinner

One of the locals borrow Greg's custom built outrigger canoe to get some dinner from the fringing reef. You can tell it is custom built for "the white man" as it has 3 outrigger supports instead of 2 - thus making it stronger but severely limiting the ability to stroke on the right hand side. Blue Hole

One of a number of blue holes in Santo, this one just outside Luganville. These are fed from underground water sources and filtered through coral - making the resulting water crystal clear (and cold).

No kidding!

An inter-island package sitting on the counter at the domestic airport waiting to be picked up. Scenes like this one are amazingly common with lots of livestock carried onto the Twin Otter aircraft! Not sure if the chicken knew the comedy of the situation - possibly had other more serious things to think about!

Tanna House

A very neat example of the local housing on the island of Tanna.

Catching lunch!

Fishing off the wharf at Pelekula, some local boys are catching sardines to be used as live bait for the Trevally that hang just within casting distance.

Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time the Chinese invested in a fish processing factory at Pelekula, Espirito Santo, now all that remains is a crumbling wharf and the odd wreck. Nevetheless it is a beautiful place to visit.

Port Resolution

Port Resolution on the island of Tanna - a popular stop off point for traveling yachies.

A fantastic example of traditional roofing using Natangora palm thatching from Epi. This one is at Breakas Resort at Pango.

Looking down into eerie depths of 650 metres of ocean while retrieving the FAD!

Raising the Moso FAD

This Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) was deployed approximately 18 months ago by the Port Vila Game Fishing Club off the coast of Moso in 650 metres of water, anchored to the bottom with 2 concrete blocks, each weighing 450 kg. While the FAD did attract fish, it was not as effective as predicted, most likely because it was placed too close to the coast and out of the major current.

It was decided by the club to retrieve the FAD, refurbish it, and re-deploy it a further 3 nautical miles out to sea. This was an excellent opportunity to study the wear and tear on the components as research for future FADS.
